Why Three Days Matters
Three days before a winter storm is the ideal time to prepare because stores are still stocked, roads are clear, and you have time to address any gaps in your preparedness. Waiting until the day before means competing with everyone else for the same supplies.
Stock Up on Essentials
Visit the grocery store now for a 3-5 day supply of food that doesn't require refrigeration or complex cooking. Include water, medications, pet food, and any baby supplies you might need.
Fuel Your Vehicles
Fill your gas tank now. Gas stations can run low before a significant storm, and having a full tank means you can stay warm in your vehicle if needed and have the option to leave if necessary.
Check Your Home Systems
Test your heating system and make sure it's working properly. Check that smoke and carbon monoxide detectors have working batteries. Know where your water shutoff is located in case pipes freeze.
Prepare for Power Outages
Charge all devices, locate flashlights and batteries, and consider a portable power bank. If you have a generator, test it and ensure you have fuel.
Prepare Your Vehicle
Keep a winter emergency kit in your vehicle including a blanket, ice scraper, jumper cables, and a small bag of sand or kitty litter for traction.
Check on Neighbors
Three days out is a good time to check on elderly neighbors or those who might need assistance. Offering to pick up supplies while you're out can make a significant difference.
